There are two things about this video, 1. with the exception of the cars, it does not come off as dated and 2. there are elements to this song that go on underneath the melody. Does anyone hear any mandolin?
w1john1967 – I agree with you.
You might like “Babylon” by David Gray who I think is Welsh. Also, “Destiny” by Zero 7 who are Australian. I really love a song that reminds me of this one, the guitar in it and the tempo are similar, it is called “Geh” (go) by Tokio Hotel. It is sung in German but even if you don’t understand German, I would still give it a try.
the church use the mandolin on a lot of their work (still going but running out of titles for their albums untitled#23 is the latest – more psychedlic these days) but this is the only one they used the bagpipes on as far as i know!!!
Funny you mentioned the car commecial. That’s what made come find the original
Commercials are useful for something after all. I’ve been so confused on where to find this damned song, and why the hell was it sung by a woman? Now I have to go buy this.
*winces* Though my brother used to try and sing me to sleep with this. He totally ruined it. But I never forgot the original beat…I just forgot I could find it on youtube.
I didn’t hear this on the car commercial, but on Vh1’s 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s. TV sure is good for SOMETHING! This song is utterly ethereal.
Can I go back to the summer of 1988 again and kiss my first serious girlfriend while this song was playing during a full moon.
Awesome 1988 song from Melbourne, Australia. The 12-string acoustic guitar with a dash of Scottish bag pipes, legendary.
They are still around. Saw them in June at the Alladin Theater in Portland. Same guys in the video, different drummer
80’s alternative music is unmatched to this day!!!

Undeniably beautiful. Legendary, maybe. Bagpipes, no. That sound came from an E-Bow.
Good tune. Corny video.
everytime i hear/see that commercial i wanna here the original. too bad the band kinda sold out, but atleast they’ll get some brand new fans.
I know what you mean- who decides the cheap 2 demensional covers of 80’s songs will make people buy cars or razors or whatever- same with BOC’s “burnin’ for you”
LA RAJA!!!
i like the kill hannah cover .. is waay better
My wife says the members of the group are all too pretty to be straight… Anyone know the gay/not gay split of the group’s members?
to TheNewsoul2, that is one cool fucking memory, that’s what life should be about, hope you still talk to that girl and if you don’t I’m sure she remembers this playing on your car tape deck, again great story, great song
One of my all-time favorite songs. Love.
Great song and Video !
They said this song was about nothing, but this is the most haunting but beautiful love song ever. The 80s was the most musically diverse decade, from Australian alternative to German pop to American heavy metal, they had it all.
You wince revealing you had a brother who loved you so much, he’d try to sing you to sleep w/ it?… I think someone was one lucky little girl! Thanks for passing that on- Not the usual kind of thing ya hear about here. Sweet!
Portland, Oregon? (If they’re from Oz, it makes more sense than Maine, unless the whole lot of them moved to the U.S., which seems doubtful.) You left out your impressions of them now; is that bad news?
Look for “Alt Rock, Indie Rock”… On cable tv, try MTVU. D’ya have university radio? IMHO, the best never was/is on “Top 20 Countdown” (although a few actually made it through). U might find something in my video log, too. There’s a ton of excellent stuff out there!
Great Original Song! Hey mamabear good recco on the zero 7. Think I found a new project thanks to you!
