Its predecessor, Dirt Farmer, his first solo LP in a quarter century, followed Levons near-miraculous recovery from throat cancer, and as such represented a new lease on life for the legendary artist, who rose to prominence as the drummer and vocalist for Levon and the Hawks, which later became The Band. The accolades poured in after Dirt Farmers release in …

in response to psirou …a beard is just some chin hair. It’s not the man…or who he is.
…& I’m a long time…36 years…or more…bearded guy. 56 years old now…sometimes ya wake up & shave. who cares? listen to the music. Caught Levon at the Beacon / NYC …not terribly long ago…late winter / early spring ’09. Incredible stuff. Levon is the man. Kudos to Larry Campbell…& Amy Helm. …& everyone else involved…Donald Fagan …Phoebe Snow…, etc.

He was clean shaven through much of the 80′s. He got rid of the beard probably back around 2000 or so. He grew one fairly recently though.

I just arrived home from Levon’s concert in Fayetteville, AR. Levon and every musician in his band were magnificient, as expected.

I have been a fan of Levon Helm and The Band since the late 60′s, this concert was the first I have been able to attend.

Levon was not feeling well and therefore was unable to sing. He was able to play drums and mandolin, and he played well as usual.

Other than not getting to hear Levon sing, (he must be human after all) the concert was fantastic.

  • vankoven says:

That’s one of the things I like about him. He really loves music.

Fantastic. “Music for the sake of doing it.” That pretty much summarizes why I can’t get enough music from this magical crowd.

I’d just like to say Electric Dirt is great. Levon Helm is inspiring.

  • mgssol90 says:

His recent success, although not to the same magnitude, is similiar to that of Bob Dylan’s past few (great) albums. Both were creatively sapped in the 80s and 90s, then out of nowhere they’ve been rejuvenated. Great to see!

  • majorhoop says:

robbie was brilliant no doubt about it……but levon is a force of nature……
